U.S. Green Ribbon School Honorees Include Three LEARNING BY DESIGN Award Winners

One Grand Award honoree and two Citation of Excellence winners in LEARNING BY DESIGN have been named Green Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. In April, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, and White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley visited Stoddert Elementary School in Washington, D.C.—a Green Ribbon honoree and Spring 2011 LEARNING BY DESIGN Citation of Excellence award recipient—to announce the 78 schools recognized as the nation’s first-ever Green Ribbon Schools.

U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools is a federal recognition program that began in September 2011. Honored schools exercise a comprehensive approach to creating “green” environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy. U.S. Universities and Colleges Experience Building Boom

Despite budget shortfalls and stretched resources, there’s a building boom in U.S. higher education, according to market research firm McGraw Hill Construction. Some $11 billion in new facilities have sprung up on American campuses in each of the past two years.

Though many public secondary institutions are facing cuts in operating money from state budgets and are responding by reducing enrollments, increasing tuition, and downsizing employees, construction projects are not suffering to the extent once thought. The public University of California system has $8.9 billion in construction going up on its 10 campuses and five medical centers, and the California State University system has $161 million.
