VCBO Architecture, Salt Lake City, Utah, received an Honorable Mention for Sunset Ridge Middle School, West Jordan, Utah. Because this new middle school, completed in August 2005, serves nearly 1,500 students, it is the ideal environment for implementing an academic program with an innovative structure of small learning communities (SLCs). Sunset Ridge
features five primary SLCs as well as two collaboration centers where teachers are encouraged to deliver integrated instruction in teams. Each SLC “house” also includes a centralized teacher prep space. Judges called the school’s site plan “lively, interesting, and thought-provoking.” |

DLR Group, Overland Park, Kan., received an Honorable Mention for Center High School, Kansas City, Mo. The
renovation of this 43-year-old building included the introduction of new features, such as a media center, an administrative suite, and additional classroom space. Completed in September 2003, Center High School serves 820 students in grades 9-12. Judges said the school’s renovation “put a nice public face” on the
building and “made it look like an important building” in
the community. |

| DLR Group, Phoenix, Ariz., received an Honorable Mention for Tonopah Valley High School, Tonopah, Ariz. Judges lauded the finishing details of the new school, which was completed in September 2005 and serves 750 students. “They integrated
historic artifacts, or the appearance of artifacts, into the façade” and “used desert tones,” judges noted. Indeed, large shapes cut out of metal panels represent petroglyphs drawn by the Native Americans who settled in the Tonopah Valley. The high school also features environmentally friendly elements, such as air
monitors, occupancy sensors, and energy-efficient lighting. |

The overall site plan is excellent.” |

| Cooper, Robertson & Partners, New York, N.Y., received an Honorable Mention for the Columbia University School of Social Work, New York, N.Y. Design and construction of this 11-story building was preceded by extensive interviews with university faculty, students, and staff. The resulting school, which serves nearly 1,500 post-secondary students, features ample classrooms, social and research spaces, and a 190-seat assembly room with access to a roof terrace. Judges lauded the building’s ability to “support a variety of group sizes.” With façades on two major public streets, the school also illustrates “good urban design to create activity streetside,” another judge commented. |

| ABHA Architects, Wilmington, Del., received an Honorable Mention for the University of Delaware, Jastak-Burgess Hall, Newark, Del. Judges called this project a “very clever intervention,” noting how effectively two former fraternity houses were combined and renovated to serve as the new headquarters for an academic department. In addition to seamlessly combining the two structures while ensuring code compliance and ADA accessibility, the building’s design “visually works very well,” judges commented. “It anchors a quadrangle area” within the central campus and becomes an attractive focal point. |

| VCBO Architecture, Salt Lake City, Utah, received an Honorable Mention for the Westminster College, Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness and Athletic Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Judges praised this project’s innovative use of space given the limited area on the college campus. For example, an international size soccer field was constructed above a 370-car parking lot, effectively doubling the amount of usable space on the
site. Judges noted this “great use of space,” as well as how the building’s overall design allows for the “innovative integration
of the wellness program with the nursing program.” |
