CBT, Boston, Mass., received a Citation of Excellence Award for St. Mark’s School, Southborough, Mass. The new performing arts center at this 320-student independent boarding school features a 500-seat concert hall, a music classroom, a studio, and rehearsal facilities.

Completed in September 2004, the center also features
high-end construction for acoustics, which facilitates a two-second reverberation and round, warm sound for choral performances.

Judges noted the project’s “beautiful execution” and sophisticated design.

DiMella Shaffer, Boston, Mass., received a Citation of Excellence Award for the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. While adhering to a 20-month design and construction schedule, DiMella Shaffer and its project partner Cutler Associates provided a new dormitory for the University of New Hampshire that became an integral part of the Gables student apartment complex on campus. Completed in August 2006, the dormitory houses 400 students and features brick exteriors with steeply sloped roofs.

Judges praised “the integration of the different materials,” noting that the exterior finishing details enhanced the brick that covers the outside of the six-story building.

Architecture for Education, Inc., Pasadena, Calif., received a Citation of Excellence Award for Herget Middle School, Aurora, Ill. Completed in August 2005, this new middle school serves nearly 850 students in grades 6-8. The building design features six classroom clusters arranged around a central hall, which includes the school’s library, technology center, life skills lab, process lab, science preparation room, and other gathering places for learning. Each classroom cluster focuses on one of six educational programs.

Judges praised the school’s exemplary attention to materials and details and its overall design, saying the “circulation is very sophisticated.”
