About Learning By Design 2004: A Lesson in Excellence

About: Learning By Design > The Judges

The outstanding educational facility projects showcased in this edition of Learning By Design could very well be the most diverse and dynamic projects we have published to date. From innovative and sustainable school solutions to efficient college dorm rooms that are more like home, the projects in this year’s Learning By Design represent the best collaborations between architects and education leaders. These collaborations reflect outstanding pre-K to 12 and college/university facilities that succeed in enriching the learning environment.

Exciting changes and trends are evident in educational facility design this year—changes and trends that can significantly enhance the student learning experience. For example, architects and educational leaders are incorporating innovative design ideas to establish strong links between middle and high schools—ensuring a smooth transition for students. At colleges and universities, planning for campus proximity and shared amenities has the added benefit of making facilities more accessible to the surrounding community as well.

Other highlights in this year’s edition:

  • A look at the out-of-classroom experience—how school and college/university design can foster valuable learning experiences throughout the facility, particularly when formal instruction isn’t occurring. See Feature Articles.
  • An innovative Michigan project—how a community’s commitment to “go green” has resulted in a stand-out sustainable building that features a ground source geothermal system, low volatile organic compound finishes, and much more. See Case Studies for this and other best practices in educational facility design.
  • The 2007 Grand Prize Award Winner—Detroit’s Cass Technical High School earned top Learning By Design honors this year. See Awards to read about all the 2007 award winners.
  • The 2007 Buyer’s Guide—our annual special section that highlights architecture firms, construction-related companies, and suppliers that can assist you in your school and college/university design and construction efforts.

Learning By Design is an invaluable resource for school administrators, college and university presidents, school board members, facility planning managers, and all those
