School construction is anticipated to grow to more than $150 billion in the next 10 years. But these are more than buildings, they are places to learn — rich, inviting environments where students can encounter new ideas and practice hands-on skills.

Today's educational institutions provide a wealth of creative design solutions, including state-of-the art technology and science facilities, multi-use areas for athletics and the arts, and common areas where students can gather.

Well-designed schools are much more than attractive spaces. Research shows that school physical environments have a real impact on student achievement and behavior.

Has your school, college, university or architectural firm recently completed an exemplary school construction or renovation project? Have you designed a state-of-the-art technology or science facility? Have you planned multi-use athletic areas or common areas? Then you will want to be a part of the Learning By Design 2006 School Design and Renovation competition.

This special guide to architectural services (published each spring) will showcase your firm's school design project to more than 65,000 influential decision makers in schools, colleges and universities nationwide, including:

  • College presidents/business officials
  • Superintendents
  • School board members
  • Facilities managers
  • School business officials
  • School architects

Project entries are reviewed by a panel of distinguished architects and facilities planners specializing in school design and construction. Each entry is evaluated in these categories:

  • Administrative area/business offices
  • Cafeteria/dining hall
  • Campus master planning
  • Childcare center
  • Dormitories/residence halls
  • "Green" school building

"Learning By Design is the design practicioner's annual resource guide for the nation's best in Architecture for Learning. Its presentation is as engaging as it is intelligent for practicioners and school board members and college and university officials alike. Coming from NSBA, the credibility of the program is without equal. While others attempt to copy, Learning By Design remians the 'gold standard.'"

"Decisions that involve technology, complex infrastructure, and schools for the 21st century demand a high degree of vision and confidence. A school building is far more than just brick and mortar, and I know what's at stake when a district commits millions of dollars to building projects. Learning By Design helps school leaders make informed and intelligent decisions about school architecture. As far as I am concerned, Learning By Design is the best reference for school architecture you can put your hands on."

— Dr. James Parsley, Superintendent, Vancouver Public Schools, Vancouver, WA
